About Us

Prairie Bluff Cattle Company is the home of Billy and Amelia Smith and our son Barrett. A couple of years ago we started looking for a second home away from the Alabama Gulf Coast. At that time we owned two businesses in Orange Beach, Alabama, an outdoor shop and charter boat. We had had enough of the beach and were ready for a getaway. When the real estate agent turned into the driveway of our farm we looked at each other and said "This is it!". Not a month after we bought our farm located on the Alabama River in Prairie, Alabama. A customer of ours made an offer on our business in Orange beach. We were retired.

We knew we wanted a working farm. We home-school our son and wanted to instill very specific morals, work ethics and values in him. What better way than to raise a child but on a working farm in the heart of the "Bible Belt", so started our extensive research on breeds of cows. When we say working farm we include cows, chickens, ducks, etc. We contacted our County Extension Agency and they sent out our Ag agent. He gave us a lot of great advice. His only downfall was he tried to convince us to raise Black Angus cattle. After nine months of research we made our decision on Texas Longhorns and made our first purchases. And thus began Prairie Bluff Cattle Company.
